Test of a Sigma AF 12-24 mm f:4.5-5.6 EX DG zoom on a Canon EOS 5D
Start - 12 mm - 15 mm - 17 mm - 20 mm - 24 mm - Summary
This is the good copy of the Sigma AF 12-24 f:4.5-5.6 EX DG I got after returning a rather bad one. I had previously tested this lens on a EOS 10D and found that it had to be stopped down to f/11 to provide sharp images. On the 5D I'd say that f/8 would suffice. This is not really evident from the crops as they are 100% crops, but reproducing an image from the 5D at a given size on paper requires less magnification than a similar FOV image from a 1.6x crop camera does. I would not hesitate any more to use it wide open if I had to. Overall it performs better than I had expected on a "full frame" camera. Only of cause it vignettes more wide open when used on a "full frame" camera, but on the other hand it is the least vignetting and sharpest 12 mm rectilinear lens available for "full frame" - as it is the only one currently available.
